Julio Vázquez (Madrid, 1956) is a Doctor in Biology from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), an expert in microbiology and molecular microbiology, training which he completed at the University of Sussex, subsequently achieving the qualification of Specialist Biologist in Microbiology and Parasitology.

Julio Vazquez is member of the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and the European Meningococcal Disease Society, where he coordinates the working group on characterisation of isolates and resistance to antimicrobials.

He belongs, in the capacity of expert, to the Invasive Bacterial Disease Coordination Group of the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) of the European Commission and is the Spanish Focal Point in the ECDC for Microbiology. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Global Meningococcal Initiative, an international group of experts which draws up recommendations for the control and prevention of meningococcal disease at both the global and regional levels.

He collaborates actively with the OPS/WHO as an external referent for meningococcal disease of the SIREVA network (Latin American Network for the laboratory surveillance of pneumococci, meningococci and haemophilus), and on numerous occasions he has participated as a temporary adviser for the OPS/WHO in missions for control of outbreaks, intervention measures, etc.

He is a co-author of more than 200 articles in prominent magazines, and has written several chapters in books on meningitis and/or infectious diseases, and is regularly invited as a speaker at national and international congresses on various aspects of diseases like meningitis, gonococcal infection, listeria and other microorganisms of his responsibility.

He is and has been the Principal Researcher of a large number of research projects subject to peer review, both national and international, as well as being the Principal Researcher of projects financed by the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, he is a reviewer of various technical journals such as J Clin Microbiol, Bacteriol J, Antimicrob Agents Chemother, J Antimicrob, etc., as well as a reviewer for research projects in public agencies of Spain, the European Commission and Latin America.
