European Research Area (ERA)

The Instituto de Salud Carlos III aims to contribute to the activities of the European Research Area (ERA), participating in the development of its policies and programmes, the instruments which form its structure and its operational areas.

The European Union has a long tradition of excellence in research and innovation, but this is often widely dispersed. On 18 January 2000, therefore, the European Commission proposed the creation of a European Research Area (ERA).

The aim was to set up a borderless research area which would make best use of scientific resources to boost employment and competitiveness in Europe. The European Union's goal is to encourage common policies on research, on the transfer of knowledge between world-class European researchers and on cooperation between member states to develop cutting-edge infrastructures.
