International collaboration

TDR is a global programme of scientific collaboration in research and training with a view to combating tropical diseases. It has a double mission:

  • To carry out research into the diseases of poverty and develop new, improved approaches to them.
  • To strengthen and develop research skills in the countries where these diseases are prevalent.

It was set up in 1975 and has its headquarters at the World Health Organization (WHO), which is responsible for its implementation. It is sponsored by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the WHO.

The Instituto de Salud Carlos III represents Spain in this programme, which is financed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
