The Instituto de Salud Carlos III collaborates and provides technical advice on the design of internationalisation policies and strategies for Spanish research in health sciences and on establishing partnerships, in coordination with the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. In this regard, it is a leader in Spain and in European and international policies, initiatives and programmes in the area of biomedical and health science research.


The Instituto de Salud Carlos III works in four international areas:

  • International research consortia
    • International Cancer Research Consortium (http://www.icgc.org/), where the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Institute of Health Carlos III, ISCIII) and the Ministry of Science and Innovation together have financed the study of the chronic lymphocytic leukaemia genome (http://www.icgc.org/icgc/cgp/64/530/826)
    • International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (http://ec.europa.eu/research/health/medical-research/rare-diseases/irdirc_en.html), consortium formed by the European Commission, National Institutes of Health of the USA, Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and funding agencies in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and the United Kingdom, where Spain was the first signatory government.
  • European Research Area
    The Instituto de Salud Carlos III actively contributes to the development of the European Research Area and is positioned in it, mainly through

    • EURAXESS Programme
      The ISCIII was one of the first institutions to endorse the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers in the European Union, and works to bring its human resource policies in line with European standards.

      The ISCIII signed the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers and has conducted an internal analysis to define a Human Resources Strategy for Researchers.
