Biomedical Research Networking Centres (CIBER)

CIBER (Biomedical Research Networking Centres) are stable, co-operative research structures that, in the form of public research consortia with recognised legal status, were created under an initiative by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III with the aim of promoting research of excellence in priority areas of Biomedicine and Health Science, carried out in the National Health System and in the National Science and Technology System. The importance of this goal for science, health and society as a whole requires the ISCIII to undertake the promotion and financial support of these CIBER.

Currently, the consortia CIBER (www.ciberisciii.es) and CIBERNED (www.ciberned.es) consist of over 400 research groups working in hospitals, universities and public research institutions, with a broad geographical distribution, which are collaborating for research excellence in the following fields:

  • Biomedical Research Networking Centre consortium (CIBER):
    • Hepatic and digestive diseases (Ciberehd)
    • Rare diseases (Ciberer)
    • Public health and epidemiology (Ciberesp)
    • Bio-engineering, biomaterials and nanomedicine (Ciberbbn)
    • Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders (Ciberdem).
    • Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition.
    • Mental health (Cibersam)
    • Respiratory diseases (Ciberes).
    • Frailty and Healthy Ageing (Ciberfes)
    • Cardiovascular Diseases (Cibercv)
    • Oncology (Ciberonc)
  • Biomedical Research Networking Centre Consortium for the area of Neurodegenerative Diseases (Ciberned).
