CO-FINANCING OF GRANTS FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION STRUCTURAL FUNDS

The European Union Cohesion policy is the main instrument that the European regions have to boost their competitiveness via the promotion of employment and training in quality, investigation, innovation and new technologies, and environmental protection, among other areas. The funds that it has in order to achieve its objectives are Structural Funds and Cohesion Funds.
Structural Funds, that are aimed at reducing the differences in the income and wealth levels of the European regions, are:

  • The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is the fund that finances productive investment that creates or maintains employment; investment that provides simple services to citizens in the areas of energy, the environment, transportation and ICT; investment in infrastructure in the areas of society, health, research, innovation, business and education; investment that helps regional and local development.
The Instituto de Salud Carlos III, that manages grants co-financed by the ERDF, participates as an Intermediary Organisation in the 2014-2020 Operational Programme for Smart Growth (POCInt). The purpose of this Operational Programme is to “contribute to the improvement and recovery of the competitiveness of the Spanish economy, via the promotion of a smarter growth model, backed by research, innovation and ICT, with special attention to the needs and potential of SMEs.”
  • The European Social Fund (ESF) finances investment to provide access to jobs, prevent unemployment and to improve the workers' ability to adjust, and to strengthen human capital, among other aspects.
The Instituto de Salud Carlos III participates as an Intermediary Organisation in the 2014-2020 Operational Programme for Employment, Training and Education; specifically, in Axis 1, dedicated to promoting employment sustainability and quality and to promoting regional mobility, and Axis 3, for investment in education, training and vocational training for the acquisition of skills and permanent learning.
